Health
Science Classes Tour the Tulane Primate
Center |
|
 |
|
On September
18, 2012 twenty Health Science students
from A. P. Fatherree Jones County Career &
Technical Education Center had the
opportunity to tour the Tulane National
Primate Research Center in Covington, LA.
This center was established in 1964 and is
a unit of Tulane University’s Health
Science Center. This laboratory allows
scientists to continue their research
toward developing treatments, diagnostics,
and vaccines for emerging infectious
diseases. Examples of diseases that are
researched are AIDS and HIV Infection,
Human T Cell Leukemia Virus I, Malaria,
Krabbe’s Disease, Lyme Disease, and
Tuberculosis. The research center
maintains eight species of nonhuman
primates for scientific reasons, and of
these, the rhesus macaque of Indian origin
is the most widely used. The other eight
nonhuman primate species are: baboons,
cynomolgus macaques, African green
monkeys, sooty and white-crowned mangabeys,
pigtailed macaques, and squirrel
monkeys.The health science students were
able to listen to guest speakers and take
walking and riding tours of the facility.

Open House
at Jones County Career and Technical
Center |

A.P.
Fatherree/ Jones County Career and
Technical Center recently held its 8th
Annual Open House on October 11, 2012.
Over one hundred people attended the Open
House including parents, students,
community members, and elected officials.
Guests enjoyed refreshments from the
Horizons Restaurant made by Mrs. Donna
Suddith’s Culinary Arts class. Guests were
also able to participate in a Health Fair
conducted by Health Science/HOSA students.
JCJC and Antonelli College
representatives were also on hand to talk
to parents and students about post
secondary educational opportunities. |

HOSA (Health
Occupations Students of America) and the
Health Science students are pleased to
announce the officers for this school
term. Students from all three county high
schools are represented. Officer
installation was held at the center on
October 11, 2012. They are as follows:

Health Science Classes Go Pink for October |

On Friday, October 12,
2012, Jones County Career and Technical
Education Center Health Science/HOSA
classes provided students and faculty with
stickers, pink ribbons, pencils, and
pamphlets to show support and spread the
word about breast cancer awareness. There
was also a door prize drawing. October is
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and
during this month charities and campaigns
are held nationwide in order to increase
awareness of the disease and raise funds
for breast cancer research. Health

SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference |
|

A.P.
Fatherree/Jones County Career and
Technical Center SkillsUSA members and
advisors attended the SkillsUSA Fall
Leadership Conference on Wednesday,
October 17, 2012 in Hattiesburg, MS at the
Pearl River Community College Woodall
Advanced Technology Center. Students
entered designs in the Pin and T-shirt
Design contests and won best overall
design in both contests. These designs
will be worn by all Mississippi
participants at the SkillsUSA National
Conference in Kansas City, Missouri this
summer.

County Career Tech Student Council Attends
Leadership Conference

The
student council at the Jones County Career
Tech Center attended the Mississippi State
Association of Student Councils Fall
Leadership Conference at Jones County
Junior College on October 16. The theme
for the conference was “The Vision of
Leadership.” Content sessions focused on
the art of communication, motivation,
mutual respect, instilling confidence,
enthusiasm, and showing credibility and
integrity on a consistent basis.After
the conference, student council visited
the third grade classes at Moselle
Elementary and presented a lesson on
Halloween Safety.
We
would like to give a special thanks to the
teachers and principal, Mr. Edward Crosby,
at Moselle Elementary for hosting this
student council event.

Elects Officers and Makes Dog Biscuits for
the Animal Rescue League |

October 22, 2012
FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community
Leaders of America) held an election for
officers. The following are the results:

On October 22, the FCCLA members met after
school hours to make dog biscuits to be
used as prizes for the Dachshund Races
sponsored by Animal Rescue League at the
South Mississippi Fair. Ellisville First
United Methodist donated dog biscuits
cutters and a donor contributed money to
pay for supplies for this project. Mrs.
Donna Suddith, FCCLA sponsor, said “I
wanted my students to have fun and do
something for the community.” Adan
Hernandez, President of FCCLA, said “I’m
proud to be working with my classmates,
and furthering my culinary skills.” Tadd
Evans, Vice President of FCCLA, had this
to say “Have fun at what you do, or don’t
do it at all.” FCCLA made 250 biscuits for
the Animal Rescue League. FCCLA members
are proud to be helping such a great
cause.

County Career Tech Student Council Spreads
Christmas Spirit |

The student
council at the Jones County Career Tech
Center brought holiday cheer to
the residents
at Comfort Care Nursing Home. They sang
Christmas carols and brought ornaments for
the residents to decorate their rooms.

MCA Poster
Contest State Winner |

The
Mississippi Counseling Association
sponsored the 47th Annual
Poetry and Poster Contest. This year’s
theme was “Inspiring Careers: Honoring
History.” The state winners
were announced at the MCA Conference in
November. Lacy Braddock won third place
in the Poster (C2) Category. Category 2
entries use photos, clipart, graphic art,
software, and mixed media. Lacy is a
second year BCT student at the Jones
County Career Tech Center.

Competition |

Jones County
Career & Technical Education Center’s
Future Educators Association (FEA) members
attended the FEA State Leadership
Conference that was held in Jackson, MS.
Members attending the conference were
Kattie Arrington, Caitlynn Broome, Kaylah
Hall, Jalen Lindsey, Elvia Marin, and
Rachel Shields. A team consisting of
Kaylah Hall, Jalen Lindsey, and Elvia
Marin placed 1st in the Ethical
Dilemma Competition. Kattie Arrington
placed 2nd in the Exploring
Professional Support Services Careers
Competition. The State winners will
advance to the FEA National Competition
held in Orlando, Florida during April.

On February 1, 2013, the
Jones County Career and Technical Center’s
SkillsUSA members competed in the
SkillsUSA District Competition at East
Central Community College. At the
competition, several students earned the
right to advance and compete in the
statewide career and technical SkillsUSA
competition that will be held in Jackson,
MS, on February 26-27. If a student
receives a first place win at state
competition, then he or she will be able
to advance to national competition in
Kansas City, Missouri, in June. Jones

Culinary
Arts II- Create the Horizons Burger
Lab |
|
The students were given the
assignment to create the Horizons Burger.
They used a 1/3 lb. beef patty and were
able to choose the condiments or other
ingrediants to make the burger. At
the end of the lab, they presented and
taste tested the burgers. |

College
Goal Sunday |
|
On Thursday,
February 21, 2013, Jones County Career and
Technical Education Center held College
Goal Sunday. Area high school seniors
that wish to pursue education beyond high
school attended the event. The event was
held to help students and families
complete the financial aid application
called FAFSA. Students that participated
in College Goal Sunday were eligible to
register for door prizes and a $250
scholarship provided by College Goal
Sunday. One of the door prizes was an iPad
donated for the event by Howard
Technology, and the winner of the iPad was
Aubrey Nickey. Aubrey is a Culinary Arts
II student from Northeast Jones High
School. The winner of the scholarship will
be announced. The event was coordinated by
Mrs. Debra Bush the Jones County Career
and Technical Education Center counselor. |

Culinary
Arts II - Bread Lab |
|
For the bread lab, Culinary
Arts II students stayed all day and
created yeast bread from scratch.
They also created their lunch by making a
yeast bread crust for homemade pizza. At
the end of the lab, students evaluated the
bread and took a loaf home. |

Culinary Arts students made icing and
decorated cakes. The guest speaker
for the Cake Decorating Lab was Mrs.
Charlotte Evans. Mrs. Evans is the
grandmother of Tadd Evans a Culinary Arts

Third Nine Weeks “High Five” Recognition
for Perfect Attendance
|

|
|
The “High Five” Program
sponsored by the student council at the
Jones County Career and Technical
Education Center encourages students to
exemplify the following five work values:
punctuality, leadership, citizenship,
spirited attitude and good work ethic. As
part of the program, one lucky student
having perfect attendance each nine weeks
at the career and technical education
center receives a $50 gift card. Collin
McCraw, Health Science I student, was
recognized for having perfect attendance
