SOUTH JONES BAND WINS TOP HONORS AT STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS

The tradition of excellence has continued for the South Jones High School Band program this spring. The symphonic band participated in the MSHSAA Band Evaluation at Ridgeland High School in March.  The band’s performance of “Salutation March” by R.F. Seitz, “Appalachian Morning” by Robert Sheldon, and “Undertow” by John Mackey, helped earn South Jones the MSHSAA “Sweepstakes Award.”  This trophy is presented at the close of state band festival to the bands that score a superior level in every contest throughout the entire school year.

On April 12, South Jones traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia, to perform in the World Strides Heritage Music Festival. After touring the historical sites of Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown Settlement located on the Chesapeake Bay, the South Jones Symphonic Band competed with 14 bands from across the Eastern United States.  South Jones was named the Gold Medal Champion with the highest over-all score among all concert bands in attendance.

South Jones also received the Adjudicator Trophy for an All-Superior score of  96.5 from a possible 100.

Band director Artie Adams said that he is extremely pleased with the results from the trip to Virginia.  “We have a very talented group of kids this year. Their hard work and good attitudes    have really paid off at our competitions all school year.”

SOUTH JONES DRUM LINE COMPLETES WINNING SEASON

The South Jones Drum Line recently competed on the State and National levels. During the months of February, March, and April, South Jones traveled across Mississippi to participate in the Mississippi Indoor Association’s percussion division.  Director Johnathan Benson explained the activity as an extension of the fall marching season into the spring semester.  He is quoted as saying, “This series of competitions was established several years ago to give percussion students more opportunities to build and improve upon their playing skills during the spring semester. We basically perform an extremely complicated half-time show inside a basketball gymnasium.”  The show theme for South Jones was called "Bound."  The music was based on the concepts of Physical Bonds, Emotional Bonds, and Common Bonds.

Throughout the season, South Jones placed 5th in Southern U.S. Regionals, 3rd in the Clinton HS Invitational, 1st in the Petal HS Invitational, and over-all 2nd place Drum Line in the Mississippi Championships.
