CONGRATULATIONS TO ARTIE ADAMS

South Jones High School Band Director Artie Adams has been named the “2009 Most Outstanding Bandmaster for the State of Mississippi.”  This tremendous honor was voted on, and presented to him by his peers on December 11, 2009, at the annual Band Directors’ Convention held in Tupelo.     

Achievements

Artie Adams is entering his 17th year as director of bands at South Jones High School.  Adams attended JCJC where he was drum captain for the Maroon Typhoon marching band.  he earned his bachelor's and master's of education degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi.  Adams was the 1993 A. E. McLain Outstanding Young Band Director for Mississippi and the 1999 Outstanding Director for the District Five Band Director's Association.  He has served on three Mississippi Lion's All-State Band staffs as percussion director for the 2007 International Lions Parade Champions.  Adams has been a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Jones County, a Jones County AEE Award of Excellence in Education teacher, Who's Who Among American Teachers, STAR Teacher for South Jones and 2006-2007 SJH Teacher of the Year.  Adams has served two terms as president of the Southeast Mississippi Band Director's Association.

Under the direction of Artie Adams, the South Jones High School Band has built a reputation as one of the most outstanding performing groups in the state of Mississippi.  For the past 16 years, South Jones has consistently received superior ratings and won first place awards in marching, concert and sight-reading at festivals and contests in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.  South Jones has finished in the top five finals in the Mississippi Marching Band Championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009.  Also, South Jones was chosen to represent the state of Mississippi in the 2009 National memorial Day parade in Washington, D.C.  South Jones has consistently placed numerous students in All-Star and All-State Bands during the past 16 years.  South Jones Band students have performed in Boston, San Diego, New York, Chicago, Denver,
San Diego, Indianapolis, Washington, D.C., London, Paris, Rome, and Vienna, Austria.

Artie often serves as an adjudicator and clinician for band contests and clinics around the state of Mississippi.  Away from school activities, he is a member of the Hattiesburg City Band, and he is an active member of his church choir.  In his leisure time, Artie enjoys running in 5K races and riding his motorcycle.  Artie and his wife, Sheila, have two children, Andrew and Abbey, who play the baritone and trombone respectively.

 

Craig Miller, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, is entering his fifth season as band director at South Jones.  He has lived in Mississippi for 16 years.  Miller earned a bachelor of music education from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and has taught instrumental music for 16 years.  In 1998 Miller was recognized as the North Forrest High School Teacher of the Year and the Forrest County School District Teacher of the Year.  Also in 1998, he was selected as North Forrest's STAR Teacher.  Miller was named the AEE Award of Excellence recipient for South Jones Middle School in 2007.  Since 1996, Miller has served as secretary of the Southeast Mississippi Band Directors' Association.  He plays in the French horn section of the Hattiesburg City Band and sings tenor in the Heritage Methodist Church choir.  In his spare time, he enjoys riding his motorcycle.  Miller's wife, April, is also a teacher at South Jones.
