SJHS LADY BRAVES SOCCER SOUTH STATE CHAMPIONS
ADVANCE TO STATE
|
|
The 2012-2013 South Jones Lady Braves soccer
team went all the way to the State Soccer
Tournament this year for the first time is
school history. They finished district play with
a record of 4-2, which qualified them to make it
to the playoffs. The team created an upset in
the first round defeating West Harrison away 2-1
in a shoot out. The second round of playoffs was
held at South Jones, where they blew Pearl out
of the water with a final score of 3-0. With
over 400 fans supporting them, the girls
defeated Pascagoula at home 2-1, which earned
them the title of South State Champions. Until
then, South Jones had never made it past the
first round of playoffs in soccer. On Saturday
February 2, the Lady Braves traveled to Clinton,
Mississippi, to compete in the State Soccer
Tournament against the reigning state champions,
Ridgeland High School. In the end the Lady
Braves came up short with a final score of 0-1.
This year the Lady Braves made history making it
as far as they did. Next year, they plan to make
history again.

WRITE NIGHT OUT 7th GRADERS AT SOUTH JONES
BECOME PUBLISHED AUTHORS/ILLUSTRATORS
|
|
Recently the 7th grade English teachers at South
Jones (B. Robertson, L. Cowart, J. Valentine,
A. Boulware) and the Media Specialist (O.
Keys) collaborated on a project where the
students wrote, illustrated, and published
original stories as part of a unit of study.
Everything was done at school and each student
was responsible for developing their stories and
illustrating their own work. It was amazing to
see their creativity and artistic skills as they
honed their writing, language, punctuation, and
grammar skills. On Tuesday, Feb. 5, their
teachers and librarian hosted a Write Night Out
Author Autograph Session/Reception in the Media
Center for the students and their families.
During this time the students shared their
stories and received certificates for
participating as well as various other caption
awards, as books were judged per class by
several community members. The project was such
a success that another teacher is having his
students write science and social studies
stories.
