Philosophy:

The South Jones Elementary (SJE) library media center is a resource that belongs to the whole school community, a resource which enriches the school community by cultivating an inviting and positive atmosphere that encourages reading and promotes student learning.  The library aspires to help each student to excel and achieve maximum potential by providing a 21st century learning environment, fostering a love for reading, and promotes an effective use of information and communications technology.
The Library Information Specialist (librarian) as educator supports the school curriculum and collaborates with classroom teachers to encourage literacy and information literacy, as well as cultivating outreach to the school community and families. The librarian partners with colleagues, students, parents, and administrators, to disseminate the library curriculum, and empower students in becoming life-long learners, responsible citizens, and industrious problem solvers.  The librarian offers book introductions to share books that open visions of our world and the worlds of others, through literature. The librarian engages in continual learning and ongoing professional development.
The media center serves as a hub for curricular and co-curricular activity within the educational community.

Belief Statements:

In the library media center we believe that:

    • all children can learn.
    • all children benefit from developmentally appropriate materials, practices, and strategies.
    • all children deserve a quality education in which individual needs are met, exceeded, and are supported.
    • social skills, such as Life skills, deserve the same attention as academic ones.
    • school is not just about children: it encompasses families, parents, community, stakeholders, society, the environment and the world.
    • children must be encouraged to see the connections between new learning and prior knowledge.
    • children are more than test scores.
    • children learn best in a safe, caring environment, one that values diversity, collaboration, and risk-taking.
    • children do thrive when expectations are high and self-esteem is higher.
    • direct instruction of students helps to increase student achievement.
