Burchfield Selected for Lott Leadership Institute

Burchfield, more information to follow Olivia Burchfield, daughter of Scott and Jennifer Sumrall of the Powers community, was recently selected to participate in the Trent Lott Leadership Institute for rising 9th grade students during the summer of 2018.  In the 8th grade at Northeast Jones, Olivia is president of the Middle School Student Council, vice-president of Middle School FBLA, and is a member of the 8th grade Lady Tigers basketball team and the Lady Tigers volleyball team.  She also volunteers as a stat keeper for the varsity baseball team and as an assistant coach for the Powers Peewee basketball team.  Olivia has also received recognition with Duke Tip for making a composite score of 21 on the ACT as a 7th grader.  After high school, she plans to attend medical school to become a doctor of Radiology.

The Trent Lott Leadership Institute selects 50 rising 9th grade students from one hundred applicants per year.  The selected students will spend two weeks at the University of Mississippi and will receive college credit in a public policy class.  The program is designed to cultivate students to become better leaders in their community.  Students are selected based on their academic grade point average, standardized test scores, and community involvement.

Congratulations to Casey Stroo, Northeast Jones Middle/High School Teacher of the Year, for being named the Jones County School District Teacher of the Year. At NEJ, Mr. Stroo is a member of the Science Department as well as an assistant soccer coach.
