Northeast Jones High School Media Center was the site of a Real World Experience for NEJ 9th graders today as they learned how to manage a 'real life' budget.   The Real World Experience Program introduces teens to the financial obligations they will face as adults.  "Each student is given a scenario that includes an occupation and entry-level salary, marital status and possibly children, and a check register.  They must budget for housing, a vehicle, utilities, food and other expenses such as child care.  They must also pay taxes."  The program is an eye-opener for students!  "They have to live within their salary and have at least $1 left over.  They also have to establish a savings account.  Loans are not an option.  If they run out of money, they have to get a second job."  Students gain new appreciation for the budgeting choices their parents must make on a daily basis!   The program was coordinated by NEJ STEM instructor Lisa Bolivar and NEJ 9th-10th grade counselor Lea Lightsey in conjunction with Jones County Extension Agents Kim Hancock and Brooke Knight as well as officials of Regions Bank of Laurel.

Laurel, MS --March 29, 2018— Parents, family members and friends of students at Northeast Jones Elementary School, Middle School and High School should not be concerned when they see, hear or hear about emergency vehicles responding to the Northeast Jones High School Football Stadium on Friday, April 6th, 2018 at 9:00AM.

In light of current events at schools around the country and heightened anxieties, we want to make sure everyone is aware that there will be a simulated two vehicle crash involving a mock DUI driver and a car with five Northeast Jones High School students on their way to the Prom. Emergency services providers will respond to and work the simulated crash scene just like they would a real crash - which involves responding with emergency lights and sirens.

Northeast Jones High School seniors and juniors, teachers, staff and parents will have the opportunity to watch and learn about the impacts inflicted on the lives of young people when drinking and/or driving distracted, especially during a time of celebration such as the upcoming NEJ Prom and Graduation. This Prom Promise-Mock Crash Program will start in the NEJ Gymnasium at 8:15am and then move to the NEJ football stadium at 9:00am. This program encompasses the support and participation from several Jones County and Mississippi emergency services agencies and private businesses including: Glade, M&M, Powers, Rustin and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments, EMServ Ambulance Service, Jones County Coroner's Office, Jones County District Attorney's Office, Jones County Emergency Management Agency and Emergency Operations Center, Memory Chapel Funeral Home, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Rescue 7 Air Ambulance, University of Mississippi Medical Center - Safe Kids Mississippi, Red Line Recruitment, Springer Auto Salvage and deputies, investigators, victim's advocates and K9 units from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.

Northeast Jones High School students, teachers and staff members will participate in this realistic event which is designed to save lives, change outcomes and eliminate poor decision making. Dr. Jennifer Lowery, Supervising Principal at Northeast Jones High School, is a strong proponent of programs designed to increase student safety and has fully supported and endorsed this program. Northeast Jones High School senior and junior high parents are invited to attend and should be prepared to witness a realistic event that is designed to get the attention of students in advance of their 2018 Northeast Jones High School Prom and Graduation. Jones County residents are asked to share this information personally and via social media platforms to help spread the word about the event and help prevent anyone from assuming a real emergency is occurring at Northeast Jones High School.

Jones County District Launches Needs Assessement Survey

Jones County School District will launch its 2018 Comprehensive Needs Assessment survey on March 5, 2018. This survey is designed to seek opinions and ideas from parents and community members, as well as from faculty, staff, and students. The questions assess the status of the district in areas like family and community outreach, curriculum and instruction, and school facilities and organization. The survey is brief and will only take a few minutes to complete. It will be available until April 2, 2018.

The results of the survey will be compiled into a report that also analyzes test scores trends and other school success measures. The district will then use this report for strategic planning, for administering federal programs that require an annual comprehensive needs assesement, and for examining current school and district practices.

Jones County School District would appreaciate your help on this important assessment of the district. The survey is available online on the district website http://www.jones.k12.ms.us/, in paper format at the district office, or at the below link.

For futhur information, please contact Missy Bufkin at mabufkin@jones.k12.ms.us or (601) 649-5201.
